Mission Viejo hasn't had much luck against Mater Dei recently, but that could start to change on the 14th. After each having a week off, the two teams will shake off the cobwebs and hit the field against one another at 7:00 p.m. Mission Viejo knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with 31 points or more in their past five contests -- so hopefully Mater Dei likes a good challenge.
Mater Dei better have a healthy lead at halftime, because if Mission Viejo's game on Thursday is any indication, that's when Mission Viejo really gets things going. The Diablos took their matchup with ease, bagging a 76-49 victory over Los Alamitos. Considering the Diablos have won four games by more than 26 points this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Mission Viejo to victory, but perhaps none more so than Luke Fahey, who threw for 569 yards and five touchdowns while completing 77.4% of his passes, and also rushed for 42 yards and one score. With that strong performance, Fahey is now averaging an impressive 310.8 passing yards per game. Mission Viejo's leading receiver Jack Junker was Fahey's top target yet again, picking up 299 receiving yards and three TDs.
Mission Viejo didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Jordan Hicks and Sawyer Thomson. Mission Viejo got some further help from Brady Bowman: he picked up a sack, made 14 total tackles, and defended two passes.
Meanwhile, Mater Dei faced St. John Bosco in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Friday. The Monarchs secured a 36-31 W over the Braves. The win almost wasn't to be: the Monarchs were down 24-10 in the second quarter.
Mater Dei's win came from a few key players Mission Viejo will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Ryan Hopkins, who threw for 295 yards and five touchdowns while picking up 14.0 yards per attempt, and also rushed for 30 yards. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in passer rating (145.3). Kayden Dixon-Wyatt did his part for the team as well, scoring a TD off of 46 receiving yards.
Mission Viejo's victory was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 9-1. Those road wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 49.7 points over those games. As for Mater Dei, their record now sits at 7-2.
Mission Viejo might still be hurting after the 49-24 defeat they got from Mater Dei in their previous meeting back in November of 2019. That contest was all but decided by halftime, at which point the Diablos were down 28-3.
