Two teams were on the hunt for playoff glory, but unfortunately for the Estero Wildcats, they weren't the ones who walked away with it. They were dealt a 66-39 defeat at the hands of the Manta Rays on Monday. Estero found out winning isn't easy when you don't work as a unit and post 13 fewer assists than your opponent.
Despite the defeat, Estero saw an underclassman step up: Amiya Lewis dropped a double-double on 17 points and 11 rebounds. That was a full 43.6% of Estero's points, marking the 15th time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. Jaydn Hayes was another key contributor, scoring eight points.
It was another big night for Maya Collins, who almost dropped a double-double on 22 points and nine steals for Lemon Bay. Collins is crushing the steal category: she's posted at least two every time she's taken the court this season. Another player making a difference was Mackenzie Long, who scored 19 points along with seven rebounds.
Estero has traveled a rocky road recently having lost nine of their last 11 games, which put a noticeable dent in their 9-11 record this season. As for Lemon Bay, the victory got them back to even at 12-12.
Estero does not have any more games scheduled as of now. Lemon Bay will be staying on the road on Wednesday to face off against Aubrey Rogers at 7:00 p.m. on February 7th. Hopefully Aubrey Rogers focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 14 last Thursday.
