Desert Ridge and Highland are an even 5-5 against one another since April of 2021, but likely not for long. The Jaguars will welcome the Hawks at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Highland will square off against a team with plenty of momentum: Desert Ridge extended their winning streak to four on Thursday. The Jaguars put the hurt on Williams Field with a sharp 15-4 win. 15 seems to be a good number for the Jaguars as the squad scooped up a victory with the same number of runs in their previous game.
Novi Muffo looked comfortable as she tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. She has been consistent : she hasn't given up more than two walks in eight consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Elena Esquivel was a standout: she went a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs, three doubles, and three RBI. That's the most hits she has posted since back in March. Jacee Larson was another key player, going 3-for-4 with three runs, three doubles, and three RBI.
Meanwhile, Highland never let their opponents score on Thursday. They blew past Higley 11-0. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Hawks.
Cambria Chacon looked comfortable as she kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits over four innings pitched.
At the plate, MiaLani Ocampo and Karsyn Norton did most of the damage at the plate: Ocampo went 2-for-3 with one home run, three runs, and two RBI, while Norton scored three runs and stole two bases while going 4-for-4. The team also got some help courtesy of MadiLynn Bowen, who went 2-for-4 with one triple and two RBI.
Highland always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .528. They are a perfect 9-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.
Highland's win bumped their record up to 14-9. As for Desert Ridge, their victory bumped their record up to 16-6.
Monday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Desert Ridge hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .455. However, it's not like Highland struggles in that department as they've averaged .357. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Desert Ridge took their win against Highland in their previous matchup back in April of 2024 by a conclusive 19-8 score. Will the Jaguars repeat their success, or do the Hawks have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
