The San Mateo Bearcats will square off against the King's Academy Knights at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. San Mateo is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.1 runs per game this season.
If San Mateo beats King's Academy with seven runs on Thursday, it's going to be the squad's new lucky number: they've won their past two matchups with that exact score. The Bearcats walked away with a 7-3 win over Aragon on Tuesday. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Bearcats.
Celia Hernandez was a major factor no matter where she played. She pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs off five hits. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than one walk any time she's pitched this season. She was also big at the plate, scoring a run while going 2-for-3.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Jana Davies, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 3-for-3. Another player making a difference was Rachel Warner, who went 1-for-3 with two RBI and one double.
San Mateo hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. The team has now struck out at least four batters in four consecutive contests.
Meanwhile, King's Academy never let their opponents score on Wednesday. They blew past Wilcox 10-0.
Not much got past Katia Nesper, who gave up just a hit and racked up eight Ks to keep Wilcox off the board.
On the hitting side, Mia Bennette was a standout: she scored two runs while going 4-for-4. That's the most hits she has posted since back in April of 2024. Sophie Giles was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-3.
King's Academy is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four games. That's provided a nice bump to their 5-3 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 6.5 runs over those games. As for San Mateo, their win bumped their record up to 9-3.
Both San Mateo and King's Academy just can't seem to miss. The Bearcats have been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 10.9 hits per game. However, it's not like King's Academy struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 4.4 hits. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
San Mateo skirted past King's Academy 6-5 in their previous meeting back in March of 2022. Will the Bearcats repeat their success, or do the Knights have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
