Yuma Catholic is on a six-game streak of home wins (dating back to last season), while River Valley is on a three-game streak of away wins: one of those streaks is about to end. Yuma Catholic will welcome River Valley at 3:45 p.m. on Monday. Yuma Catholic is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 11.9 runs per game this season.
Last Thursday, Yuma Catholic made easy work of Tonopah Valley and carried off an 11-1 victory. The Shamrocks might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won ten matches by six runs or more this season.
Leonel Avelar was a major factor no matter where he played. He struck out nine batters over five innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in five consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with two RBI.
In other batting news, Yuma Catholic let Joey Carey and Erik Topete run wild. Carey went 1-for-2 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI, while Topete scored two runs and stole two bases while going 2-for-3. Ivan Guzman was another key player, scoring two runs while going 2-for-3.
Meanwhile, River Valley sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 6-4 win over ALA - West Foothills on Friday. The Dust Devils haven't had any issues with the Guardians recently, as the game was their third consecutive victory against them.
Like Yuma Catholic, River Valley also got a great game from a two-way player: Mickey Gonzalez. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing five innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits. Gonzalez was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and one double.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Zain Bruton, who went 2-for-3 with one triple, one run, and one RBI. Another player making a difference was Jeremiah Putt, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 1-for-2.
River Valley's win bumped their record up to 7-2-2. As for Yuma Catholic, their victory bumped their record up to 13-1.
Monday's contest will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Yuma Catholic hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .434. However, it's not like River Valley struggles in that department as they've averaged .348. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Yuma Catholic took their win against River Valley when the teams last played back in April of 2024 by a conclusive 7-1. Will Yuma Catholic repeat their success, or does River Valley has a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
