Washburn fought the good fight in their extra-innings contest against Highland Park on Monday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Scots by a score of 10-9.

Mirabel Johnson and Frankie Bretl stepped up to the plate in a big way. Johnson went a perfect 3-for-3 with one triple, one stolen base, and two RBI, while Bretl went 4-for-5 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. Johnson has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last four times she's played. Caroline Bretl was another key player, going 3-for-5 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.
Meanwhile, Apple Valley entered their tilt with Mahtomedi on Monday with two consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with three. They put the hurt on the Zephyrs with a sharp 12-2 victory. The matchup marked the Eagles' most dominant win of the season.
Keura Roloff made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 13 batters over five innings while giving up just two earned runs off four hits (and only one walk). Those 13 strikeouts gave her a new career-high. She was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with one home run, two stolen bases, and three runs. She also hit a triple, marking her first of the season.
In other batting news, Apple Valley let Avery Sikich and Ginny Gores run wild. Sikich went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI, while Gores went 2-for-3 with one triple, two RBI, and one run. Those three hits gave Sikich a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Taylor Gretz, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs, one double, and one RBI.
Apple Valley always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .645. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Washburn's defeat ended a four-game streak of away wins and brought them to 8-4. As for Apple Valley, their victory bumped their record up to 8-6.
Apple Valley's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Tuesday. Washburn has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 8.1 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for Apple Valley, though, as they've been averaging only 4 strikeouts. Will Washburn keep running through batters, or will the Eagles buck the trend?
