Semifinals, Gilman Await McDonogh After Overtime Win
Patrick Sartory scored with 1:14 left in overtime to give No. 4 seed McDonogh a 6-5 win over St. Mary’s and a spot in Friday’s MIAA A Conference semifinal against top-ranked Gilman.
Princeton-bound goalie Tyler Fiorito recorded 10 of his 15 saves in the first half to keep his team within one goal of the lead while the Eagle offense was shutout in the first half.
"He's a game-changing kind of goalkeeper," McDonogh coach Scott Corrigan told the Baltimore Sun. "Tyler does an unbelievable job of stopping the ball. But then when you listen to our team when we're on defense, he's the one leading it."
Sam Eby, Sartory and Kyle Rice each scored goals in the second half for the Eagles. Tyler Frederick assisted on the game-winning goal.
For St. Mary’s, senior Matt Bell scored two goals while Peter Stewart made seven saves.
Friday’s semifinal game between McDonogh (16-5) and top-seed Gilman (17-0) will begin at 7:15 p.m. at Towson University’s Johnny Unitas Stadium.
Calvert Hall Dominates Archbishop Spalding
Calvert Hall flew out to a 5-0 lead and the No. 2 seed Cardinals cruised to an easy 16-5 victory over No. 7 Archbishop Spalding in Tuesday’s other MIAA A quarterfinal showdown.
The win sends Calvert Hall to Friday’s 5 p.m. semifinal game against defending champion and No. 3 seed Loyola at Johnny Unitas Stadium.
Calvert Hall won 20 of 24 face-offs and coach Brian Kelly credited his team’s control of the ball as a key to the win.
"I thought we rode really well and I thought we faced off really well," Kelly told the Baltimore Sun. "We wanted to keep possession of the ball and we did that, and I think it was a big positive for us."
Calvert Hall’s Patrick Fanshaw scored a career-high seven goals while Sean Maguire chipped-in with three goals and an assist. Michael Brashears had two goals and Jason McFadden had a goal and three assists.
Rich May had three goals and an assist to lead all Cavaliers’ scorers.
Friday’s semifinal game between Calvert Hall (15-2) and Loyola (11-4) will begin at 5 p.m.
