Football Recap: Buena Piles Up the Points Against Skyline

You can't lose the game if you win every quarter, and that was precisely Buena's strategy against Skyline on Friday. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that the Colts blew the Coyotes out of the water with a 52-20 final score. The Colts pushed the score to 42-13 by the end of the third, a deficit the Coyotes had little chance of recovering from.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Buena to victory, but perhaps none more so than Michael Lujan, who rushed for 238 yards and three touchdowns while picking up 10.8 yards per carry, and also picked up 32 receiving yards. Lujan really tore up the turf during one magnificent 86-yard run. Ricardo Brooks was another major influence, as he rushed for 119 yards and ran in a TD.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: Buena was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 394 rushing yards. That's the most rushing yards they've posted since back in October of 2024.

Buena didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off three passes before the game was over. It was truly a group effort as Colton Garrett, Tariq Howard, and TJ Walker picked up one apiece. Buena got some further help from Cooper Kraus: he made 19 total tackles (3.0 for loss).

Despite the loss, Skyline still got an impressive performance from Caleb Wheeler, who rushed for 142 yards and one TD.

Buena has started the season off flawlessly and has a 2-0 record to show for it. Those wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they've averaged 45.0 points this season. As for Skyline, their loss dropped their record down to 1-1.

Coming up, Buena will be defending their home field for the first time this season when they go up against ALA - Gilbert North at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Skyline, they are headed away from home for the first time to take on Goldwater at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
