Unity Reed has enjoyed a two-game homestand but will soon have to dust off their road jerseys. They will take on the Gainesville Cardinals at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Unity Reed comes in on a streak of failing to score more than 23 points in their last nine games, a trend the squad is of course eager to reverse.
Unity Reed suffered their biggest loss since December 8, 2023 on Tuesday. They were dealt a 62-7 loss at the hands of Osbourn Park. While losing is never fun, Unity Reed can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Virginia basketball rankings (they are ranked 364th, while Osbourn Park is ranked 17th).
Meanwhile, Gainesville came tearing into Tuesday's contest with three straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 31.3 points) and they left with even more momentum. They strolled past Freedom with points to spare, taking the game 49-35.
Madison McKenzie was her usual excellent self, scoring 16 points along with four steals. She hasn't dropped below two steals for four straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Peyton White, who scored 13 points along with seven rebounds and two steals.
Unity Reed dropped their record down to 0-14 with that defeat, which was their seventh straight at home. Those losses could be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they only averaged 14.6 points per game. As for Gainesville, their victory bumped their record up to 17-3.
Unity Reed took a serious blow against Gainesville in their previous meeting on January 2nd, falling 62-16. Can Unity Reed avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
