On Friday, The Merritt Island Christian Cougars faced the Lake Mary Prep Griffins in a battle between two of the state's top teams. Merritt Island Christian's tough 52-30 defeat to Lake Mary Prep might stick with them for a while. Merritt Island Christian was given a dose of their own medicine in this game as Lake Mary Prep apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in September of 2022.
When it comes to explaining why Merritt Island Christian lost, one person who can't be blamed is Genesis Grimstead. Despite the final result, he rushed for 124 yards and two touchdowns on only 15 carries. Grimstead's longest rush was for an incredible 70 yards. Another player making a difference was Bode Handwork, who threw for 233 yards and a touchdown while picking up 11.1 yards per attempt.
Wade Brashears continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines for Lake Mary Prep, rushing for 252 yards and three touchdowns while picking up 15.8 yards per carry. Brashears is on a roll when it comes to rushing touchdowns, as he's now punched in two or more in the last four games he's played. Carson Cruse was another key contributor, gaining 160 total yards and two touchdowns.
Merritt Island Christian has been struggling recently, as they've lost three of their last four matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 6-4 record this season. As for Lake Mary Prep, the victory was the fourth in a row for they, bringing their record for this year to 7-2.
Merritt Island Christian does not have any more games scheduled as of now. Lake Mary Prep will be playing at home against Real Life Christian Academy at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Real Life Christian Academy is also coming in off of a big victory, so somebody is in for a big reversal of fortune.
