The Ignacio Bobcats will head out to face off against the Pagosa Springs Pirates at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Pagosa Springs will square off against a team with plenty of momentum: Ignacio extended their winning streak to three on Saturday. The Bobcats blew past Sanford 27-7. The Bobcats' hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.
Ignacio got a massive performance out of Ambrose V, who went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, three runs, and three RBI. Another player making a difference was Evan Maez, who went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, three runs, and three RBI.
Ignacio always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .763. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their OBP total in three consecutive matchups.
Meanwhile, Pagosa Springs hadn't done well against Bayfield recently (they were 1-8 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Saturday. The Pirates put the hurt on the Wolverines with a sharp 12-2 victory.
Chris Martinez made a splash no matter where he played. He pitched five innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off four hits. Pagosa Springs is 3-1 when Martinez allows one or fewer earned runs, but 6-8 otherwise. Martinez was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-4 with three stolen bases, two RBI, and one run. That's the most stolen bases he has posted since back in April of 2024.
In other batting news, Kyler Henderson and Zach Pouyer did most of the damage at the plate: Henderson got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one home run and three runs, while Pouyer went a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. Pouyer has become a key player for Pagosa Springs: the team is 5-1 when he posts at least two runs, but 4-8 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Charles Washburn, who went 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI.
Ignacio pushed their record up to 15-4 with the win, which was their eighth straight at home. The home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.9 runs over those games. As for Pagosa Springs, the win got them back to even at 9-9.
Tuesday's game might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Ignacio has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .502. However, it's not like Pagosa Springs struggles in that department as they've averaged .466. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
