The Lopez Lobos will be home for the holidays to greet the Mercedes Tigers at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Lopez will stroll in with a eight game home winning streak (dating back to last season), but they should still watch out: the last time they lost at home was their January 20 matchup with Mercedes.
After soaring to 55 points the game before, Lopez were a bit more limited in their match on Tuesday. They were the victim of a rough 43-22 defeat at the hands of Veterans Memorial. While losing is never fun, Lopez can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 763rd, while Veterans Memorial is ranked 269th).
Meanwhile, Mercedes took a serious blow against Harlingen South on Friday, falling 60-26. The result shouldn't come as a shock considering that's the fewest points Mercedes has scored all season.
The loss doesn't tell the whole story though, as several players had good games. One of the most active was Jaymie Flores, who scored nine points along with seven rebounds and five steals. Leah Adame was another key contributor, scoring 11 points along with eight rebounds and four steals.
Lopez's loss dropped their record down to 9-8. As for Mercedes, their loss ended a nine-game streak of away wins dating back to last season and brought them to 11-6.
Lopez came up short against Mercedes in their previous matchup back in January, falling 42-35. Can Lopez avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
