Columbine has been on the road for three straight, but on Saturday they'll finally head home. They will take on the Valor Christian Eagles at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. Columbine will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Colorado Rankings (they are ranked 220th, while the Eagles are ranked third).
Last Wednesday, Columbine came up short against the Tigers and fell 63-54.
Despite the defeat, Columbine saw an underclassman step up: Cash Boykin scored 30 points along with eight rebounds and two blocks. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Boykin has scored all season. Jacob Williams was another key contributor, scoring five points.
Meanwhile, Valor Christian stacked an eighth blowout win onto their ever-increasing hoard on Wednesday. They simply couldn't be stopped as they easily beat Chatfield 78-37 at home. The win was nothing new for Valor Christian as they're now sitting on seven straight.
Cole Scherer continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines, scoring 25 points along with five rebounds and three steals. He has been hot recently, having posted 15 or more points the last nine times he's played. Another player making a difference was Brady Wynja, who scored eight points along with seven rebounds.
Columbine's loss dropped their record down to 2-16. As for Valor Christian, their victory was their 12th straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 16-2.
This contest is one where the number of possessions is likely to be a big factor: Columbine have been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 27.1 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Valor Christian struggles in that department as they've been averaging 30.6 rebounds per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
Columbine suffered a grim 76-54 defeat to the Eagles in their previous meeting back in January. A big factor in that loss was the dominant performance of Wynja, who dropped a double-double on 18 points and 15 rebounds. Now that Columbine knows the damage he can cause, will they be able to stop him this time? Check MaxPreps.com after the match to find out.
