Appomattox County has gone 9-1 against Gretna recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Friday. The Raiders are taking a road trip to square off against the Hawks at 5:30 p.m. Appomattox County is coming into the game hot, having won their last four games.
Appomattox County is headed in fresh off scoring the most runs they have all season. Everything went their way against Dan River on Wednesday as they made off with a 15-2 win. Considering the Raiders have won five matchups by more than five runs this season, Wednesday's blowout was nothing new.
Paisley Mann was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, pitching three innings while giving up just two earned runs off three hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances. She was even better at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two stolen bases, three RBI, and two runs. That's the most stolen bases she has posted since back in June of 2024.
In other pitching news, Chloe Vaughan looked comfortable as she didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit over four innings pitched. She has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in eight consecutive appearances.
Back at the plate, the team relied heavily on MaKenzie Elliott, who went 3-for-4 with three runs, one triple, and two RBI. That's the most runs she has posted since back in May of 2024. Kaysen Kesler was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, three RBI, and one run.
Appomattox County was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .474. That's the best batting average they've posted all season.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Gretna, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Monday. They walked away with a 5-2 victory over William Campbell on Wednesday. The win was a breath of fresh air for the Hawks as it put an end to their three-game losing streak.
Alyssa Keesee made a splash no matter where she played. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run while striking out eight over seven innings pitched. Keesee was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-2 with one run and one RBI. That RBI marked the first that she has brought in this season.
In other batting news, Sophia Brooks was excellent, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. That stolen base was her first of the season. Another player making a difference was Kinsley Rigsby, who went 2-for-4 with one stolen base and one run.
Appomattox County pushed their record up to 11-3 with the victory, which was their seventh straight on the road. The road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.3 runs over those games. As for Gretna, their record is now 3-7.
Appomattox County's speedy runners might be the difference in Friday's contest. The Raiders have been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.1 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Gretna, though, as they've been averaging only 0.6 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Appomattox County continue to outrun the ball?
Appomattox County came up short against Gretna in their previous matchup back in April, falling 5-2. Can the Raiders avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
