Basketball Recap: Blacksburg Takes a Loss

If Blacksburg was riding high fresh off their 74-25 takedown of Greenville Tech Charter last Friday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Blacksburg Wildcats took a 70-66 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Chesnee Eagles. The Wildcats were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Eagles earlier this season, when they won 62-55.

When it comes to explaining why Blacksburg lost on Tuesday, don't look at Christian Federico. Despite the final result, he shot 4-for-6 from beyond the arc and dropped a double-double on 24 points and 11 rebounds. The dominant performance gave Federico a new career-high in points. The team also got some help courtesy of Ziyon Harris, who went 6 of 14 on his way to 14 points.

Chesnee was led to victory by Elijah Brown and Braylon Blanton. Brown went 11 for 22 en route to 32 points and seven boards, while Blanton went 7 of 13 on his way to 17 points along with six assists and five rebounds. Brown's evening made it three games in a row in which he has scored at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Ben Reese, who posted eight points.

Blacksburg has traveled a rocky road recently having lost six of their last eight matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 6-12 record this season. As for Chesnee, their win was their tenth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 17-5.

Blacksburg wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next game, a 71-57 victory against Liberty on the 31st. As for Chesnee, they will square off against High Point Academy at 7:30 p.m. on February 4th. High Point Academy will roll in looking for their 17th straight win, something Chesnee surely won't give up without a fight.
