Niwot (Colo.) captured the lead in the fourth quarter and held on for a 14-10 victory over
Greeley West (Greeley, Colo.) on Saturday. The Cougars captured the lead for good when
Nathan Merriman thew a touchdown to
Alex Kinnison.
After taking the lead on a
Taylor Wertz touchdown run, the Spartans went into halftime with a 7-0 lead. The Cougars scored the winning points with a touchdown pass by Merriman to Kinnison that came in the fourth quarter.
Despite scoring seven points in the third, Niwot still trailed by 3 points going into the fourth quarter. But seven points in the fourth helped NHS pull out the victory.
The Cougars' most effective player was
Bryan Meek. The junior running back ran for one touchdown and kicked two extra points.
Greeley West's Wertz played well. The junior running back ran for one touchdown.
GW's lone touchdown came on a run by Wertz in the first quarter.
The victory is a complete turnaround from last season's game between these two teams, which the Greeley school took, 58-31.
Niwot (1-2) goes up against Loveland in a 4A Northern game matchup next week, while Greeley West (1-2) locks horns with Thompson Valley also in a 4A Northern game.
