It was not without controversy, but Oregon's new six-tier athletic system is in place and team action is underway.
ÿ
The new system set up by the Oregon Schools Activities Association had been challenged by several larger districts concerned with travel issues. State Education officials have approved the plan for now, with a review scheduled for the end of the year.
ÿ
After several schools took part in "zero week" games prior to Labor Day, a full slate of contests were played this week, most of them non-league affairs dictated by the smaller conferences established under the new 6A system.
ÿ
Members of the media are also having to get used to the new structure, which replaces Oregon's long-standing, four level classification system. The press uncertainty was reflected in the first Associated Press football polls. Sportswriters placed a much longer list of teams in the survey as they try to determine how the scrambling of some conferences will affect team success.
ÿ
There were some clear favorites in the balloting. Jesuit of Beaverton was the unanimous No. 1 in the 6A survey. The Crusaders won the 4A championship last season. West Albany, which competed with much larger schools last season, was the top pick among 5A football teams. Traditional powerhouse Scappoose was tabbed as the No. 1 team in the 4A survey. Here is a complete rundown of Oregon's first AP polls:
