Southwest is 1-9 against the Cardinals since November of 2019 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Friday. The Southwest Dragons will look to defend their home court against the Southside Cardinals at 6:30 p.m. Hopefully Southwest focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 19 on Tuesday.
Southwest struggled with offensive rebounds on Tuesday (the Cowboys had 13 more) and sadly the final score reflected it. Southwest received a tough blow as they fell 60-42 to the Cowboys. The loss unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Southwest in their matchups with the Cowboys: they've now lost eight in a row.
Despite the loss, Southwest got a solid performance out of Stephanie Gonzalez, who scored 16 points along with five rebounds. Ilee Robinson was another key contributor, scoring eight points along with five rebounds and three steals.
Meanwhile, Southside can now show off ten landslide victories after their most recent contest on Tuesday. They blew past Winn 58-30 at home. Given Southside's advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 442nd, while the Mavericks are ranked 1010th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Southside got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Mckayla Flores out in front who scored 18 points along with six steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Gabryela Galvan, who scored eight points along with seven assists and five rebounds.
Southwest's loss was their fourth straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 15-19. As for Southside, they have been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 23-10 record this season.
Friday's match will pit two of the most dominant guards against one another: Lillian Covarrubias and Galvan. Covarrubias has been dynamite this season: she has averaged 11.8 points, 2.4 steals, and 6.6 rebounds. For her part, Galvan has averaged 15.2 points, 2.4 steals, and 3.1 assists.
Southwest came up short against the Cardinals in their previous meeting back in January, falling 48-36. Will Southwest have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check MaxPreps after the match for a full breakdown of the game, commentary, and other basketball content.
