The Barrington Eagles will head out on the road to take on the Cranston East Thunderbolts at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. Barrington is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.8 runs per game this season.
Barrington is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Rhode Island's top teams: St. Raphael Academy, who was ranked fifth at the time (Barrington was ranked 11th). The Eagles lost 8-1 to the Saints on Saturday. Having soared to a lofty ten runs in the game before, the Eagles couldn't push the score so high this time.
Meanwhile, Cranston East had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 9.5 runs) and they went ahead and made it three on Friday. Their pitcher stepped up to hand the Kilties a 17-0 shutout. The Thunderbolts might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won seven matchups by ten runs or more this season.
Lexi Montalban looked comfortable as she struck out seven batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and not a single walk). She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts any time she's pitched this season.
On the hitting side, Cydnee Meekins was incredible, firing off two home runs, three runs, and four RBI while going 2-for-2. Those two home runs gave her a new career-high. Gianna Tocci was another key player, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with three runs and two RBI.
Cranston East lost a few balls and finished the game with two home runs. That's the most home runs they've managed all season.
The defeat snapped Barrington's winning streak at four games and leaves them with a 8-3 record. As for Cranston East, their record now sits at an identical 8-3.
Both the two teams just can't seem to miss. Barrington has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 9.8 hits per game. However, it's not like Cranston East struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 4.9 hits. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Barrington took their victory against Cranston East when the teams last played back in April by a conclusive 16-1 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Eagles since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
