Each year since 2006, MaxPreps has recognized outstanding performers in high school football. America's source for high school sports continues the tradition to close out the 2023 season by naming the top player in each state. Selections are based on team success and individual excellence in addition to local and state accolades.
Cameron Dyer of
La Cueva (Albuquerque) is the 2023 MaxPreps New Mexico High School Football Player of the Year. The 6-foot-4, 195-pound junior quarterback led the Bears to a 10-3 record and Class 6A state title.
After starting the year 0-3, La Cueva reeled off 10 consecutive wins
capped by a 35-14 win over three-time defending champion Cleveland (Rio
Rancho) in the state title game. Dyer totaled 339 yards – including a season-high 220 on the ground – and three touchdowns in that contest.
For the season, Dyer threw for 2,402 yards and 23
touchdowns along with 103 carries for 1,359 yards and 23 more scores. He
averaged 13.2 yards per carry and rushed for at least 100 yards in each of his
final eight games.
In a 74-20 win over Eldorado (Albuquerque) in late September, Dyer completed 18 of 24 passes for a season-high 433 yards and six touchdowns.
Dyer piled up 570 total yards and five touchdown in a 63-33 win over Las Cruces in the state semifinals.
