Basketball Recap: Laylah Lou Walters Leads a Balanced Attack to Beat Gardner-South Wilmington

Donovan/St. Anne hadn't done well against Gardner-South Wilmington recently (they were 1-8 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Tuesday. Donovan/St. Anne sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 37-35 victory over the Gardner-South Wilmington Panthers. That's the second time they've managed to beat them this season, as they also won 47-32 last Monday.

Donovan/St. Anne's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Laylah Lou Walters, who dropped a double-double with 14 points and ten rebounds. That makes it five consecutive games in which Walters has scored at least a third of Donovan/St. Anne's points. Bailey Henneike was another key player, putting up nine points and eight boards.

The victory got Donovan/St. Anne back to even at 13-13. As for Gardner-South Wilmington, they have traveled a rocky road recently having lost 13 of their last 15 contests, which has put a noticeable dent in their 6-23 record this season.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Donovan/St. Anne will venture away from home to face off against Grace Christian Academy at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. As for Gardner-South Wilmington, they are taking a road trip to challenge Illinois Lutheran at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. Gardner-South Wilmington will also cruise into their next match with the timing on their side: Illinois Lutheran will have lost four straight heading into Thursday's game.
