AA District 3 recap Oct. 23, 2012
Gibbs was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from fourth to second in AA District 3. The Eagles beat Union County 42-6 earlier in the week.
Austin-East and Pigeon Forge played the most hotly contested game in the league this week, with Austin-East eventually emerging with a 22-21 victory.
Gatlinburg-Pittman's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Tanner Cox threw for 120 and two touchdowns and Blade Durbin had 74 yards receiving. On the ground Michael Muszik chipped in 253 yards. Justin Horner helped Gatlinburg-Pittman's passing attack out by catching four balls for 46 yards.
6-foot-1 quarterback Cox of the Highlanders is the league leader in passing yards this season with 1137. He has also thrown 13 touchdowns. On the ground, Fulton's Daryl Rollins has rushed for 1267 yards which leads the league. The leading receiver in the league this season is Xavier Hawkins. The Fulton star has 17 catches for 466 yards.
A big matchup in AA District 3 this week will be when Gibbs takes on the Roadrunners. Brad Conley's team is in second place, while Austin-East is in sixth place.
Gatlinburg-Pittman made the biggest jump in the national rankings this week, rising to 4,106 from 4,362. The improvement was the result of 34-33 victory over Carter last week.
