Eagle River is 2-8 against South Anchorage since May of 2022 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Wednesday. The Wolves will host the Wolverines at 6:30 p.m. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (Eagle River 3.3, South Anchorage 2.2) so any runs scored will be well earned.
Eagle River easily dispatched Wasilla on Friday, but unfortunately both the margin and the ultimate result were a different story in this one. The Wolves fell just short of Service by a score of 5-3 on Saturday. The matchup marked the Wolves' lowest-scoring contest so far this season.
Meanwhile, South Anchorage strolled into their game on Saturday with a perfect record and they left with the same. They blew past Lathrop 10-2. The result was nothing new for the Wolverines, who have now won three games by eight runs or more so far this season.
Jack Zuspan made a big impact no matter where he played. On the mound, he pitched two innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit. Zuspan was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one stolen base and two RBI. Those two RBI gave him a new career-high.
In other pitching news, Peter Cornelius tossed a big game, striking out six batters over five innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits.
Back at the plate, the team relied heavily on Chase Dixon, who went 1-for-4 with three runs, one triple, and one stolen base. What's more, he posted two RBI, the most he's had since back in May of 2024. Chase Mascelli was another key player, going 3-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double.
South Anchorage's win was their sixth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 9-0. Those home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.0 runs on average over those games. As for Eagle River, their loss was their first of the season and makes their record 4-1-1.
Eagle River was able to grind out a solid win over South Anchorage in their previous matchup back in May of 2024, winning 6-1. Do the Wolves have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Wolverines turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
