Monticello has gone a perfect 8-0 against Albemarle recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Thursday. The Mustangs will welcome the Patriots at 6:30 p.m. Monticello's pitching crew has only allowed 1.1 runs per game this season, so Albemarle's hitters will have their work cut out for them.
Things were looking good for Monticello after they put the first runs on the board on Monday, but unfortunately for them things went downhill from there. They took a 6-3 hit to the loss column at the hands of Spotswood. The loss was the Mustangs' first of the season.
Madison Steppe spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered six runs (all of which were unearned) on eight hits and racked up 11 Ks. She has been consistent : she hasn't given up more than one earned run any time she's pitched this season.
At the plate, Monticello saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Willow Barr, who scored a run while going 1-for-2.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Albemarle). They put the hurt on Chancellor with a sharp 17-2 victory on Monday. The Patriots not only won on Monday, but they posted their biggest win since April 16, 2024.
Mela Gibson was a standout: she went 1-for-2 with three runs, three RBI, and one triple. Those three RBI gave her a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Sam Armstrong, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI.
Albemarle always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .593. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Having lost for the first time this season, Monticello fell to 7-1. As for Albemarle, their win (their first of the season) made their record 1-4.
Albemarle's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Thursday. Monticello has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 11.1 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for Albemarle, though, as they've been averaging only 4 strikeouts. Will Monticello keep running through batters, or will the Patriots buck the trend?
Everything went Monticello's way against Albemarle in their previous matchup back in May of 2024, as Monticello made off with an 8-2 victory. Will the Mustangs repeat their success, or do the Patriots have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
