The Las Animas Trojans waltzed into their game on Saturday with two straight wins but they left with three. They strolled past Calhan with points to spare, taking the game 41-25. Given Las Animas' advantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 107th, while Calhan is ranked 246th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Emma Netherton was her usual excellent self, dropping a double-double on 12 points and 13 rebounds. She is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as she's now pulled down eight or more in the last three games she's played. Another player making a difference was Jadann Eck, who scored 11 points along with three steals.
Despite the loss, Calhan saw an underclassman step up: Savannah Stewart scored seven points.
Las Animas pushed their record up to 8-2 with that win, which was their seventh straight at home. As for Calhan, they are on a four-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-7.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Las Animas will take on Rocky Ford at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Calhan, they will look to defend their home court on Monday against Thomas MacLaren School at 6:30 p.m.
