Phillipsburg (Kan.) came into Saturday's contest ranked No. 18 in Kansas, but was stunned by
Norton (Kan.), 20-7. Norton was ranked at No. 51 in the MaxPreps Freeman Rankings for Kansas coming into the week.
After taking the lead on a rushing touchdown in the first quarter, the Bluejays led 14-0 at the half.
Norton saw its 14-point halftime lead fall to 13 entering the fourth.
The Panthers'
Sean Newlan played well. The senior quarterback ran for one touchdown. His performance brought his touchdown total to four on the year.
Phillipsburg's lone touchdown came on a run by Newlan in the third quarter.
NHS came in allowing an average of 18.9 points per game this season. The defense really stepped up, holding PHS well below its season average of 40.4 points scored per game.
The victory is a complete turnaround from last season's game between these two teams, which the Panthers took, 57-30.
The win was a nice bounce back for Norton, which lost to Beloit last week, 56-9. The defeat comes as a step back for Phillipsburg, which notched a 56-7 victory over Minneapolis in its previous outing.
