The Mater Lakes Academy Bears's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Tuesday after their fourth straight loss. They took a serious blow against Doral Academy, falling 81-39. While losing is never fun, Mater Lakes Academy can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 206th, while Doral Academy is ranked 17th).
Despite the loss, Mater Lakes Academy saw an underclassman step up: Vanessa Vancott scored 21 points along with two steals. That was a full 53.8% of Mater Lakes Academy's points, marking the fifth time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Alessandra Wandembergh, who scored nine points along with three steals.
Doral Academy's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Stephanie Vega, who scored 12 points along with six rebounds and five steals. Another player making a difference was Angelina Deleon, who scored 19 points along with six rebounds and three steals.
Mater Lakes Academy has traveled a rocky road recently, as they've lost five of their last six matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 6-7 record this season. As for Doral Academy, the win was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 13-3.
Mater Lakes Academy will take on Central Florida Christian Academy at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Central Florida Christian Academy is looking to tack on another W to their three-game streak on the road. As for Doral Academy, they will face off against McArthur at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. McArthur is also coming in off of a big victory, so somebody is in for a big reversal of fortune.
