The Smyrna Eagles will challenge the Delmarva Christian Royals at 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday. Smyrna's pitching crew has only allowed 3.8 runs per game this season, so Delmarva Christian's hitters will have their work cut out for them.
Smyrna is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Delaware's top teams: Cape Henlopen, who was ranked first at the time (Smyrna was ranked tenth). The Eagles came up short against the Vikings on Tuesday, falling 10-2. The Eagles haven't had much luck with the Vikings recently, as the team has come up short the last three times they've met.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Delmarva Christian). Everything went their way against Archmere Academy on Monday as they made off with a 15-3 victory. The Royals haven't had any issues with the Auks recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive win against them.
Kylie McCabe made a splash while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, pitching six innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off five hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, three runs, and two RBI.
In other batting news, Taylor Lowe and Eve Bohinski did most of the damage at the plate: Lowe went 2-for-3 with three stolen bases, three RBI, and two runs, while Bohinski got on base in three of her five plate appearances with four stolen bases and three runs. Another player making a difference was Braelyn Hellens, who got on base in three of her five plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.
Delmarva Christian pushed their record up to 4-6 with the victory, which was their third straight on the road. The road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.0 runs over those games. As for Smyrna, their defeat dropped their record down to 7-7.
Smyrna took their victory against Delmarva Christian in their previous matchup back in May of 2024 by a conclusive 16-0 score. Do the Eagles have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Royals turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
