The Cheyenne Desert Shields will take on the Awaken Christian Lions at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. Cheyenne is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 10 runs per game this season.
Cheyenne fell victim to Southeast Career Tech and their airtight pitching crew on Wednesday. They lost 8-0 to the Roadrunners. The Desert Shields have struggled against the Roadrunners recently, as the game was their eighth consecutive lost meeting.
Cheyenne saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Esai Esparza, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base.
For whatever reason, it's the away team that's had the advantage when Awaken Christian and Sandy Valley meet (three straight games heading into this one) and that held true again on Tuesday. The Lions put the hurt on the Sidewinders with a sharp 28-2 victory. Considering the Lions have won seven contests by more than seven runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.
Jadon Kenney was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. What's more, he posted two strikeouts, the most he's had since back in March. He was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 1-for-1.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Antonio Rubeis, who got on base in all five of his plate appearances with one home run, four runs, and four RBI. He is becoming a predictor of Awaken Christian's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 3-7 when he doesn't). Lucas Wulfenstein was another key player, scoring three runs and stealing a base while getting on base in three of his five plate appearances.
Awaken Christian always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .767. They are 6-1 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.
Awaken Christian now has a winning record of 8-7. As for Cheyenne, their loss dropped their record down to 12-3.
Saturday's match will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Cheyenne hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .358. However, it's not like Awaken Christian struggles in that department as they've averaged .348. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Everything went Cheyenne's way against Awaken Christian in their previous matchup back in April of 2024, as Cheyenne made off with a 13-2 win. Will the Desert Shields repeat their success, or do the Lions have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
