With talented players like Marcus Denmon and Kathleen Scheer displaying their hardwood talents throughout the 2008 season, basketball fans didn’t have to look too far for basketball excitement in Missouri.
Now, that pair of roundballers is reaping the awards that come along with an outstanding basketball season by heading the Show-Me State’s All-State basketball teams.
Although Denmon and his Hogan Prep teammates were unable to capture the ultimate prize, a Class 3 state championship, the Ram senior capped off an outstanding season just the same and earns MVP honors on the boys’ All-Class Big Six basketball team.
Despite facing gimmick defenses almost night-in-and-night-out, Denmon scored 30 points on at least 10 occasions, including a season-high 37 points twice. The 6-foot-3 guard warmed up toward the end of the season and produced 30 points or more in a five-of-six game stretch in February.
The University of Missouri recruit averaged 27.7 points per game in his final go around, pulled down 5.8 rebounds and was credited with 4.9 assists an outing. Denmon shot 63.8 percent from the field and 77.8 percent from the free throw line. He averaged more than three 3-pointers a game.
Joining Denmon on the Boys All-Class Big Six Team were Josh McCoy (Fort Zumwalt South), Drew Hanlen (Webster Groves), Kramer Soderberg (St. Charles West), Johnny Coy (St. Joseph Benton) and Bryant Allen (Maplewood-Richmond Heights).
As good as Denmon was, Scheer may have been even more volatile. The New Haven senior played every position on the floor, as needed, and seemed to score at will. If New Haven needed a basket, Scheer made sure she got it and in the process she earned MVP honors on the girls All-Class Big Six basketball team.
The 6-3 Duke recruit went over 2,000 points earlier this year and scored 761 points this season in 27 games, an average of 28.2 points per outing. Scheer also pulled down 12.9 rebounds a game and averaged three assists, two steals and five blocks a night.
The Shamrock was the team leader in every category and shot 49.4 percent from the field (266 of 538) in 2007-08. Scheer connected on 82 of 204 3-pointers for 40.2 percent and made 79.9 percent of her free throws (147 of 184).
Joining Scheer on the Girls All-Class Big Six Team are Yvonne Turner (Columbia Hickman), Casey Garrison (Bolivar), Channon Haywood (Hazelwood East), Meghan Lewis (McCluer South-Berkeley) and Hailey Parks (Sullivan).
