Each year since 2006, MaxPreps has recognized outstanding performers in high school basketball. America's source for high school sports continues the tradition to close out the 2020-21 season by naming the top player in each state. Selections are based on team success and individual excellence, in addition to local and state accolades.Dionna Gray
is the 2020-21 MaxPreps West Virginia High School Girls Basketball Player of the Year. In a shortened season, the 5-foot-4 junior point guard led the Highlanders to a 16-1 record and the Class AAAA state championship.
A transfer from Huntington St. Joseph Central, Gray averaged 17.2 points, 6.2 assists, 5.3 steals and 4.2 rebounds for her new team as a junior. She scored 52 points in three state tournament games, including 13 in the 58-49 championship win over Mountain State Athletic Conference rival Cabell Midland.
Gray is in position to reach 1,000 points for her career with a solid senior campaign and has helped guide Huntington and St. Joseph Central to a 61-6 record collectively. She has been part of state championship teams with both programs.
