Even though the Bessemer City Yellow Jackets scored an imposing 55 points on Tuesday, the East Gaston Warriors still came out on top. East Gaston walked away with a 66-55 victory over Bessemer City. Given East Gaston's advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 260th, while Bessemer City is ranked 596th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Trenton Sherrill was his usual excellent self, scoring 37 points. That makes it seven consecutive games in which he has scored at least a third of East Gaston's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Matt Pierre, who scored 12 points.
Despite the loss, Bessemer City saw an underclassman step up: Tristan Gordon scored 26 points. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Gordon has scored all season. Jayveon Miller was another key contributor, scoring 12 points.
The win makes it two in a row for East Gaston and bumps their season record up to 12-6. As for Bessemer City, they have not been sharp recently, as they've lost 12 of their last 13 matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-16 record this season.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. East Gaston will take on Highland Tech at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Highland Tech focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up ten on Wednesday. As for Bessemer City, they will play host again and welcome Thomas Jefferson, where tip off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Thomas Jefferson is no doubt hoping to put an end to a four-game streak of away losses.
