I Section I recap September 24, 2013
Perry's Austin Nightingale recorded the longest rushing play in I Section I this season in his game against Mountain View last week. Nightingale's team lost to the Toros as he sprinted for 75 yards on the play and finished with 90 in all.
Highland was able to crack the Top 25 in the state rankings this week after besting Mountain Ridge. The Hawks came in at 22 in the state poll after placing at number 26 last week.
Basha's dynamic duo of Zach Werlinger and Doc O'Connor proved to be unstoppable against Pinnacle, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Werlinger threw for 390 yards and 2 touchdowns and O'Connor had 162 yards receiving. Jared Schmidt helped Basha's passing attack out by catching 7 balls for 142 yards.
The Bears' dynamic duo of Werlinger and O'Connor proved tough for the Pioneers to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week.
Nightingale was the most successful running back in the league this week. Teammate Aaron Ratliff added to the ground attack by rushing for 32 yards.
Werlinger put up the best numbers in passing as Basha defeated Pinnacle.
Chip White made the biggest impact on defense this week as Highland beat the Mountain Lions. The 6-foot-2 senior grabbed 2 interceptions.
O'Connor was the best wideout in the league this week as Bernie Busken's team bested Dana Zupke's team.
He was 32-49 with 1 interception.
The Bears' Werlinger and O'Connor have formed a dream team this season, leading I Section I in both passing and receiving yards. Werlinger has thrown for 1,244 yards this season, while O'Connor, a 5-foot-9 receiver, has 28 catches for 400 yards. Bryce Perkins from Chandler leads the league in rushing with 350 yards.
Adding to the longest winning streak in the league this week, Hamilton beat Liberty 14-10,. This was the team's fourth consecutive win.
