The Mt. Vernon Yellowjackets will head out to face off against the Newark Catholic Green Wave at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Mt. Vernon's pitching crew has only allowed 3.1 runs per game this season, so Newark Catholic's hitters will have their work cut out for them.
Mt. Vernon fought the good fight in their extra-innings matchup against Licking Valley on Tuesday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Panthers by a score of 3-2. Having soared to a lofty ten runs in the game before, the Yellowjackets couldn't push the score so high this time.
Meanwhile, Newark Catholic came tearing into Monday's contest with five straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 13.2 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They walked away with a 5-1 victory over the Bulldogs. While the Green Wave didn't have the best season last year (they finished 10-15), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.
Aly Rothweiler 2026 was a major factor no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out ten batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits (and only one walk). Rothweiler 2026 was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with one RBI.
In other batting news, Newark Catholic got a big performance out of Veronica Bailey 2026, who went 2-for-5 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double. Brooklyn Kurtz 2027 was another key player, getting on base in all four of her plate appearances with one run and one RBI.
Newark Catholic kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. They are a perfect 7-0 when they post 11 or more hits.
Newark Catholic's record is now 8-2. As for Mt. Vernon, with the defeat, they broke their four-game winning streak and moved their record to 7-3.
Everything went Mt. Vernon's way against Newark Catholic when the teams last played back in April of 2025, as Mt. Vernon made off with an 11-1 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Yellowjackets since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
