Two dominant guards in Jonathan Swainston and Lincoln Mathis are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. The Wendell Trojans will challenge The Ambrose School Archers at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Each of these teams will be battling to keep a four-game winning streak alive.
Wendell is headed in fresh off scoring the most points they have all season. They enjoyed a cozy 67-48 victory over Aberdeen on Friday.
Jordon Swainston continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines, going 7 of 9 en route to 20 points in addition to five boards and five steals. Jarrett Borges was another key player, going 6 for 11 on his way to 17 points and six rebounds.
Meanwhile, you're bound to get a positive result if you outscore your opponent every quarter, and that's exactly how it played out for The Ambrose School on Thursday. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that they blew Marsing out of the water with an 87-51 final score. The Archers pushed the score to 69-41 by the end of the third, a deficit the Huskies had little chance of recovering from.
The Ambrose School found their leader in sophomore Zane Gammon, who dropped a double-double on 21 points and 12 boards. The dominant performance also gave Gammon a new career-high in assists (seven). Another player making a difference was Mathis, who dropped a double-double on 15 points and 13 rebounds.
The Ambrose School smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 22 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive rebounds in four consecutive contests.
The Ambrose School's win was their ninth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 11-5. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 73.4 points per game. As for Wendell, their victory was their first in the conference, bumping their conference record up to 1-2 and their overall record up to 9-4.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Wendell has been crashing the boards this season, having averaged 20.1 rebounds per game. However, it's not like The Ambrose School struggles in that department as they've been averaging 38.6 boards. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
Wendell was dealt a bruising 77-35 defeat at the hands of The Ambrose School when the teams last played back in March of 2021. Can Wendell avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
