The South Warren Spartans will head out on the road to face off against the University Heights Blazers at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. South Warren is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.8 runs per game this season.
South Warren can't be too worried about heading out to take on University Heights: they just beat Logan County at home, who had been dominant on their own field up to that point. The Spartans walked away with an 11-8 victory over the Cougars on Thursday. Surprisingly, this marked the Spartans' fifth straight game in which the away team has come away the victor.
Ty Croghan tossed a big game, pitching five innings while giving up just two earned runs off five hits.
At the plate, Justin Capps was incredible, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with two stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in March. Brandon Perkins Jr. was another key player, going 1-for-5 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double.
Meanwhile, University Heights waltzed into their match on Thursday with four straight wins... but they left with five. Everything went their way against the Colonels as they made off with a 6-0 win.
The result came thanks to Josh Pace's shutout, as he gave up just two hits and racked up ten Ks.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Hayden Hunt, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs and one stolen base. He has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last three times he's played. Another player making a difference was Courtland Gibson, who went 2-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
South Warren has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won eight of their last nine contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 16-3 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.2 runs on average over those games. As for University Heights, their win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 13-5.
Both South Warren and University Heights just can't seem to miss. The Spartans have been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 9.3 hits per game. However, it's not like University Heights struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 3.7 hits. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
South Warren couldn't quite finish off University Heights in their previous matchup back in April of 2024 and fell 8-6. Can the Spartans avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
