Rogers and Lexington are an even 5-5 against one another since March of 2018, but likely not for long. The Rogers Pirates will challenge the Lexington Golden Bears at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Rogers has three straight wins, Lexington has four straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
Rogers made up a huge gap compared to their last game against Colbert County, but they still couldn't quite topple them. Rogers' pitchers stepped up to hand Colbert County a 9-0 shutout on Friday. While the Pirates didn't have the best season last year (they finished 7-14), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.
Griffen Herston was a major factor no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, keeping things locked down with no earned runs or hits over five innings pitched. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up a single hit in three consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of his five plate appearances with one double.
In other batting news, Rogers got a massive performance out of Ticer Wood, who went 3-for-5 with two stolen bases and three RBI. That's the most stolen bases Wood has posted since back in February of 2024. Bo Mitchell was another key player, scoring two runs while getting on base in three of his five plate appearances.
Rogers was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .394. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Colbert County only posted a batting average of .087.
Meanwhile, Lexington came up short against East Limestone on Friday and fell 9-4.
Jacob Nava was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he pitched 5.1 innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off four hits.
On the hitting side, Aiden Davis was cooking despite his team's loss, going 1-for-2 with one home run and three RBI. Those RBI marked the first that he brought in this season.
Rogers pushed their record up to 4-1 with the victory, which was their third straight on the road. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.0 runs over those games. As for Lexington, their loss dropped their record down to 2-6.
Rogers came up short against Lexington in their previous matchup two weeks ago, falling 7-2. Can Rogers avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
