Otay Ranch is 1-9 against Montgomery since January of 2019 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Friday. The Otay Ranch Mustangs will be playing at home against the Montgomery Aztecs at 6:30 p.m. Both teams come into the matchup bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Winning is just a little bit easier when you work as a team to rack up 11 more assists than your opponent, a fact Otay Ranch proved on Wednesday. They managed a 52-46 victory over Mater Dei Catholic. The win was all the more spectacular given Otay Ranch's disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 439th, while Mater Dei Catholic is ranked 205th).
It was another big night for Adam Delacruz, who scored 26 points along with seven rebounds and two steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Fabian Resler, who scored three points along with eight assists and three steals.
Meanwhile, Montgomery stacked a 13th blowout win onto their ever-increasing hoard on Wednesday. They simply couldn't be stopped as they easily beat San Ysidro 88-31 on the road. Winning may never get old, but Montgomery sure is getting used to it with their seventh in a row.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Montgomery to victory, but perhaps none more so than Jj Sanchez, who dropped a double-double on 17 points and ten assists. Sanchez has been hot recently, having posted 15 or more points the last ten times he's played. Xair Mendez was another key contributor, scoring 17 points along with eight assists and four steals.
Otay Ranch's victory was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 8-16. As for Montgomery, their victory bumped their record up to 20-2.
Some high-performance offense is likely on the agenda as both teams are some of the highest scoring teams in the league. Otay Ranch hasn't had any problem running up the score this season, having averaged 57.8 points per game. However, it's not like Montgomery struggles in that department as they've been averaging 69.9 points per game. With both teams so easily able to put up points, the only question left is who can run the score up higher.
Otay Ranch was taken down by Montgomery 70-34 when the teams last played on January 10th. The match was all but decided by halftime, at which point Otay Ranch was down 36-16.
