SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Spalding Hoophall Classic concluded Monday with games that held appeal at both the national and local levels.
No contest was more entertaining than the day's opener, pitting California's Archbishop Mitty against New York's Holy Cross. The Monarchs held on in a thriller for a 62-61 victory, bouncing back from their first lost of the year Friday against Riordan.
The night concluded with a huge rivalry game between two of Springfield rivals Central and Commerce.
After leading 33-24 at half, Central went on to win 68-51 in front of a packed house of hometown fans.
Here are complete results from Monday's action:
Archbishop Mitty (Calif.) 62, Holy Cross (N.Y.) 61
Playing without injured post Drew Gordon, Archbishop Mitty used a team effort to overcome Holy Cross.
Enoch Andoh led the way for the Monarchs with 21 points, including a go-ahead basket with less than 30 seconds to play. Holy Cross had several attempts to pull out the win, but the Mitty defense buckled down and thwarted the Knights' last second efforts.
Collin Chiverton had 19 points for Mitty, and Angelo Caloiaro added 11.
Sylven Landesberg, a 6-foot-6 senior headed to Virginia, led the Holy Cross charge with 26 points.
St. Raymond (N.Y.) 84, Taft (Calif.) 69
St. Raymond emerged from the halftime intermission looking up at a tied scoreboard.
That didn't last long.
The Ravens broke a 37-37 halftime tie with a strong second half and a dominant fourth quarter on their way to an 84-69 win.
Kevin Parrom excelled for St. Raymond, who was up by one at 60-59 with seven minutes to play. He tallied 27 points and 16 rebounds, showing the ability to both run the court and play the post.
Junior Omari Lawrence also played a big role in the Raven win, finishing with 23 points.
Eugene Phillips was the leading scorer for the Toreadors, netting 20 points. Larry Drew, Bryce Smith and Justin Hawkins also scored in double figures for Taft.
St. Anthony (N.J.) 95, Scott County (Ky.) 52
He may start for the University of Pittsburgh next year, but Travon Woodall comes off the bench for the St. Anthony Friars. He provided a big spark in that role in a 95-52 win against Scott County in front of an overflow crowd at Blake Arena.
Woodall had 19 points in 13 minutes while playing shutdown, on-the-ball defense. He added five rebounds, two assists, and three steals in the rout.
Mike Rosario and Dom Cheek each contributed 17 for the Friars, who remain undefeated.
Jordan Adams had 12 for the defending state champion from Kentucky.
Longmeadow (Mass.) 66, South Hadley (Mass.) 55
In an all-Massachusetts affair, South Hadley beat Longmeadow 66-55.
Nicolas Sierra led all scorers with 21 points for South Hadley. The Tigers were also helped by Patrick Donnelly's double-double (13 points and 10 rebounds).
South Hadley put forth a valiant effort, but fell short. The Lancers managed to shoot 6-13 from three point land. Colin Lacey did most of the damage with 12 points.
Sabis (Mass.) 56, New Leadership (Mass.) 45
The Bulldogs of Sabis prevailed in a high-intensity matchup, 56-45, thanks in large part to the performance of Jesus Sanchez.
Sanchez was one of four bulldogs to notch nine points. He also pulled down 13 rebounds, helping Sabis win the war on the boards against New Leadership by 12.
The Wildcats were competitive throughout the contest, but being limited to a mere six points in the third quarter left them in a hole too deep to escape from.
Charles Jackson had 22 points on 9-of-20 shooting for New Leadership.
Central (Mass.) 68, Commerce (Mass.) 51
In a showdown between Springfield powers, Central knocked off Commerce, 68-51 in a game that attracted a strong contingent of local fans.
