5A Midwestern recap Oct. 16, 2012
Springfield extended the longest winning streak in 5A Midwestern this week by beating North Eugene, 62-0. The victory was the sixth in a row for the team.
Springfield took down the Highlanders 62-0 last week, the largest margin of any game.
Marist's dynamic duo of Kamerun Smith and Josh Harper proved tough for Churchill to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Smith threw for 264 yards and two touchdowns and Harper had 127 yards receiving. Austin Baird helped Marist's passing attack out by catching four balls for 59 yards.
Dalton Pachano made the biggest impact on defense this week as North Eugene fell to David Heuberger's team. The 5-foot-10 senior recorded one fumble.
Zach Haxby was the most productive running back in the league this week. In 26 carries, he ran for 87 yards as Edmund Rivera's team topped the Lancers. Johnny Dawson also contributed to the rushing game with 54 yards on the ground.
Marist's Smith and Harper have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Smith has thrown for 1777 yards this season, while Harper, a 6-foot-3 receiver, has 35 catches for 630 yards. Willamette's Samuel Aguirre leads the league in rushing yards with 749.
The top two teams in 5A Midwestern will face off this week when first place Springfield takes on second place Marist. The Millers topped the Highlanders last week, while Frank Geske's team beat Churchill.
The top two defenses in the league will face off this season when the Spartans take on Springfield. Marist has allowed 91 points this season, while the Millers have given up 125. The Spartans allowed 7 points last week as they topped Darrell Mehl's team.
Springfield led the league in scoring this week after putting up 62 points on North Eugene.
