Peninsula Catholic has enjoyed a three-game homestand but will soon have to dust off their road jerseys. They will challenge the Steward Spartans at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. Peninsula Catholic comes in on a streak of failing to score more than 25 points in their last 12 games, a trend the team is of course eager to reverse.
Last Tuesday, Peninsula Catholic took a serious blow against Cape Henry Collegiate, falling 53-7. Peninsula Catholic has not had much luck with Cape Henry Collegiate recently, as the team's come up short the last seven times they've met.
Meanwhile, Steward had already won three in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 32 points), and they went ahead and made it four on Tuesday. They blew past Nansemond-Suffolk Academy, posting a 61-20 victory at home. Steward has made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won eight matches by 20 points or more this season.
Steward's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Ava Johnson, who scored ten points along with six rebounds and five blocks. Another player making a difference was Tori West, who scored 14 points along with three steals.
Peninsula Catholic dropped their record down to 0-12 with that defeat, which was their 13th straight at home dating back to last season. As for Steward, the victory got them back to even at 9-9.
Peninsula Catholic was dealt a bruising 46-9 defeat at the hands of Steward in their previous matchup back in January of 2023. The match was all but decided by halftime, at which point Peninsula Catholic was down 40-8.
