Chewelah has gone 7-1 against Newport recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Saturday. The Cougars are taking a road trip to face off against the Grizzlies at 11:00 a.m. Chewelah is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 11.4 runs per game this season.
Chewelah can't be too worried about heading out to take on Newport: they just beat Almira-Coulee-Hartline at home, who had been dominant on their own field up to that point. The Cougars walked away with a 9-4 win over the Warriors on Thursday.
The team relied heavily on Makai Masuda, who went 2-for-4 with two RBI, one run, and one double. The team also got some help courtesy of Nolan Jeanneret, who went 2-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Newport hadn't done well against Chewelah recently (they were 0-7 in their previous seven matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Tuesday. The Grizzlies came out on top against the Cougars by a score of 4-0.
Hank Kirkwood made a splash no matter where he played. On the mound, he didn't allow a single earned run while striking out 11 over seven innings pitched. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two walks in nine consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with one triple, two RBI, and one run.
Kirkwood wasn't the only one making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Brody Driver, who went 2-for-3 with one run.
Chewelah pushed their record up to 18-1 with the victory, which was their eighth straight on the road. Those road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.5 runs over those games. As for Newport, they are on a roll lately: they've won 11 of their last 12 contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 14-3 record this season.
Saturday's game might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Chewelah has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .493. However, it's not like Newport struggles in that department as they've averaged .474. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Chewelah couldn't quite get it done against Newport in their previous matchup on Tuesday as they fell 4-0. Can the Cougars avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
