Harleigh Price spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered five earned (and three unearned) runs on ten hits and racked up 11 Ks. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't tossed less than eight strikeouts in three consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Sakiya Merriex was cooking despite her team's loss, going 3-for-4 with one stolen base, one double, and one RBI. Another player making a difference was Kimber Long, who scored a run while going 2-for-3.
Meanwhile, Williston came into Thursday's contest having lost four straight, but that streak is now in the rearview. Everything went their way against Newberry on Thursday as they made off with a 13-5 win. The result was nothing new for the Red Devils, who have now won nine games by seven runs or more so far this season.
Aubrey Bertrand made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, tossing 3.1 innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. Bertrand was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one double and one RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Emily Asencion, who fired off two home runs, three runs, and four RBI while going 3-for-4. Those four RBI gave her a new career-high. Luna Asencion was another key player, scoring four runs and stealing a base while going 3-for-5.
Williston was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .395. They are 7-1 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.
Columbia's defeat dropped their record down to 12-8. As for Williston, their victory bumped their record up to 11-9.
Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Friday. Columbia hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 0.7 home runs per game. However, it's not like Williston struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 0.5 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down.
