The Dove Creek Bulldogs will be playing at home against the Vail Christian Saints at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Last Friday, Dove Creek humbled Sargent with a 50-8 victory. Given Dove Creek's advantage in MaxPreps' Colorado football rankings (they are ranked ninth, while Sargent is ranked 45th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Gage Buffington was his usual excellent self, rushing for 51 yards and two touchdowns on only six carries, while also picking up 60 receiving yards. Buffington was no stranger to the big play, cutting upfield for a catch that went for 60 yards.
Another reason for the win was Dove Creek's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for nine sacks. The heavy lifting was done by Trevan Ivie and Nic Aragon who racked up five sacks between them.
Meanwhile, Vail Christian was fully in charge on Friday, breezing past Rangely 60-8 on the road. The win was just what Vail Christian needed coming off of a 44-14 defeat in their prior contest.
Vail Christian found their leader in underclassman Asher Morris, who rushed for 86 yards and a touchdown on only five carries, and also threw for 118 yards and four touchdowns. Owen Koontz was another key contributor, rushing for 81 yards and two touchdowns.
Dove Creek is on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six matches, which provided a nice bump to their 7-2 record this season. As for Vail Christian, their victory bumped their record up to 6-3.
Everything came up roses for Dove Creek against Vail Christian in their previous matchup back in October of 2020 as the team secured a 52-20 victory. Does Dove Creek have another victory up their sleeve, or will Vail Christian turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
