The Willcox Cowboys's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Thursday after their third straight loss. They fell 56-49 to Benson. The loss unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Willcox in their matchups with Benson: they've now lost eight in a row.
Willcox lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Jovani Rodriguez, who scored 12 points along with five rebounds and two steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Rodriguez has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Caden Hooper, who scored 11 points along with three steals.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Benson to victory, but perhaps none more so than Colton Bellmore, who scored 20 points along with five assists and two steals. Dalton Crockett was another key contributor, scoring 19 points along with six rebounds.
Willcox has not been sharp recently as the team has lost four of their last five matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 9-17 record this season. As for Benson, their victory bumped their record up to 12-15.
Willcox will look to defend their home court on Monday against Empire at 7:00 p.m. Empire knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with flashy point totals in its past five matchups -- so hopefully Willcox likes a good challenge. As for Benson, they will head out on the road to challenge Tombstone at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Tombstone will be up against Benson's rather soft defense (which has allowed 51.62 points per matchup), so fans could be in store for a big offensive showing.
