It may have taken overtime to finish the job, but the Whiting Oilers ultimately got the result they hoped for on Wednesday. They came out on top in a nail-biter against Gary West Side and snuck past 52-49. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory Whiting has posted yet this season.
Victoria Velez was her usual excellent self, scoring 20 points along with seven rebounds and seven steals. She is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last 12 games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Torie Davis, who scored 13 points along with eight rebounds and three blocks.
The victory was the third in a row for Whiting, bringing their record for this year to 8-11-1. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 57.7 points per game. As for Gary West Side, they are on a five-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 2-16.
Whiting will be playing in front of their home fans against Wheeler at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Wheeler is coming into the matchup hot, having won their last six games. As for Gary West Side, they will head out on the road to square off against Lighthouse College Prep Academy at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Lighthouse College Prep Academy comes in on a streak of failing to score more than 15 points in their last six games, a trend the squad is of course eager to reverse.
