Drew Daoust spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned (and one unearned) run on eight hits. Southern Door is 3-1 when Daoust allows one or fewer earned runs, but 2-6 otherwise.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Tyler Neinas, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with three stolen bases, four runs, and one triple. He is becoming a predictor of Southern Door's success: when he posts at least two stolen bases the team is undefeated (and 2-7 when he doesn't). Braylon Berg also deserves some recognition as he launched his first home run of the season.
Southern Door was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .457. The last time their batting average was this high was was before the start of last season.
Meanwhile, St. Mary Catholic was able to grind out a solid win over Manitowoc Lutheran on Monday, taking the game 6-2.
St. Mary Catholic also let their pitcher toss all seven innings and he was also dialed-in: Ethan Plutz gave up two runs (both of which were unearned) on three hits and racked up six Ks. Plutz has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than one walk in three consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Mason Wagner was excellent, going 2-for-3 with two runs, one double, and one RBI. Another player making a difference was Joe Pirillo, who went 1-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
St. Mary Catholic has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a massive bump to their 7-6 record this season. As for Southern Door, their record now sits at 5-7.
Southern Door might still be hurting after the 11-0 loss they got from St. Mary Catholic when the teams last played back in May of 2024. Can the Eagles avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
