Central of Clay County took a ten-run loss the last time they faced off against Benjamin Russell, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. JT Wilkerson made a splash while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowed only a hit over four innings pitched. He also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Central of Clay County is 2-1 when he allows at most two earned runs, but 2-4 otherwise. Wilkerson was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 1-for-3.
In other pitching news, Ryder Waldrep looked comfortable as he pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs off three hits.
Back at the plate, the team relied heavily on Tyler Boyd, who went 2-for-4 with two triples, one run, and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Ranburne fought the good fight in their extra-innings match against Beulah on Friday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Bobcats by a score of 11-10. One positive for the Bulldogs, at least, is that this was the most points they've scored all season.
Ranburne's defeat was their fourth straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 1-4. As for Central of Clay County, their record is now 4-5.
Everything went Central of Clay County's way against Ranburne in their previous meeting back in February of 2024, as Central of Clay County made off with a 12-0 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for Central of Clay County since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
