Maddie Grice spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on four hits and racked up 14 Ks. Those 14 strikeouts set a new season-high mark for her.
On the hitting side, South County got a massive performance out of Ava Abromavage, who went 2-for-5 with two stolen bases, three runs, and one RBI. Lauren Mrowka was another key player, going a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI and one double.
They weren't the only ones making solid contact: South County kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 14 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in 13 consecutive contests.
Meanwhile, West Springfield waltzed into their matchup on Monday with five straight wins... but they left with six. They walked away with a 4-1 win over the Wolverines.
West Springfield also let their pitcher toss all seven innings and she was also dialed-in: Andrea Yagui gave up only one earned run on six hits and racked up 11 Ks. Yagui has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in 11 consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Natalie Coughlin was incredible, going a perfect 2-for-2 with one home run and two RBI. Another player making a difference was Elaina Primozic, who went 3-for-4 with two doubles and one run.
South County's record is now 16-8. As for West Springfield, their record now sits at 20-4.
Both the two teams just can't seem to miss. South County has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 10.3 hits per game. However, it's not like West Springfield struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 5 hits. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Everything went South County's way against West Springfield in their previous meeting back in April, as South County made off with an 8-2 victory. Will the Stallions repeat their success, or do the Spartans have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
