Atkinson County extended their winning streak (dating back to last season) to six on Friday, bumping them up to 2-0. They enjoyed a cozy 41-27 win over the Montgomery County Eagles. The Rebels pushed the score to 35-8 by the end of the third, a deficit the Eagles cut but never quite recovered from.
Ladarien Roberts had a dynamite game, rushing for 133 yards on only 12 carries. He also deserves a shoutout for his performance on D, picking up a sack and making eight total tackles. Darrian Roberts helped out on the ground, rushing for 84 yards.
They were just one part of a punishing run game: Atkinson County was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 273 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 255 rushing yards in 11 consecutive games dating back to last season.
Another reason for the win was Atkinson County's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for three sacks. The team can thank three different players for their defensive prowess: Roberts, Messiah Johnson, and Tykevious Lock, who each picked up one sack apiece.
As for Montgomery County, they now have a losing record of 1-2. As for they, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 1-2.
Despite the loss, Montgomery County still got an impressive performance from Elijah McEwen, who rushed for 87 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and also picked up 104 receiving yards and one score. McEwen was no stranger to the big play, connecting on a big catch that went for 52 yards.
Looking ahead, Atkinson County will venture away from home to face off against Pataula Charter Academy at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. As for Montgomery County, they will have a little extra prep time after the defeat as they won't be playing again for a while. They'll take on Taylor County at 7:30 p.m. on the 12th.
